Sunday school children of Gethsemane make a pilgrimage to Gospel sites
With the blessing of the Chief of the Russian Ecclesiastical Mission in Jerusalem, Archimandrite Roman (Krassovsky) of the Russian Church Abroad, during the fall break in Israeli schools, a senior group of students of the Sunday school of the Convent of St Mary Magdalene, Equal-to-the-Apostles in Gethsemane participated in a trek to the Nahal Amud canyon in the region of Gennesaret Lake. These sites are connected with the earthly life of the Savior, so the scenic hike gave the youth an opportunity to ponder and discuss the events described in the Gospel which took place at the time of the birth of Christianity. The trip began on the shore of the Mediterranean Sea, at a place called Rosh Ha Nikra, not far from Lebanon, and ended several kilometers away from Capernaum.
The kids enjoyed pitching tents and preparing a meal, which helped them to bond as a group.
One of the main goals the organizers set was to unite the young people who in their daily lives live in a non-Christian environment. The hike gave them the opportunity to get to know each other and share times with members of other Orthodox Christian families living in Israel. The difficulties and tribulations they all overcome brought them closer together.
The participants expressed the hope that such trips become a regular tradition.
