The Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church confirms the appointment of a new vicar bishop for the Western European Diocese of the Russian Church Abroad
On October 15, 2018, at a meeting of the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church in Minsk, Belarus, a report from Metropolitan Hilarion of Eastern America and New York, President of the Synod of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, containing a request for the confirmation of Protopriest Adrian Ecchevaria, a clergyman of the Western European Diocese, as Bishop of Vevey, Vicar of the Western European Diocese (Journal No. 79), was heard.
The members of the Holy Synod decided to confirm the election of Protopriest Adrian Ecchevaria as Bishop of Vevey, Vicar of the Western European Diocese of the Russian Church Abroad, with the scheduling of his consecration after his tonsure to monasticism and elevation to the rank of archimandrite.
In accordance with the Act of Canonical Communion (par. 7), signed on May 17, 2007, bishops of the Russian Church Abroad are elected by its Council of Bishops, or, in instances outlined in the Regulation of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, by its Synod of Bishops. The nomination is confirmed on a canonical basis by the Patriarch of Moscow and All Russia and the Holy Synod of the Russian Orthodox Church.
On September 20, 2018, during a meeting of the Synod of Bishops of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, Protopriest Adrian Ecchevarria, a cleric of the Western European Diocese, was nominated to be Bishop of Vevey, Vicar of the Western European Diocese. His Eminence Metropolitan Hilarion of Eastern America and New York then sent a letter of intercession for his confirmation.
