A Delegate of the Russian Orthodox Church Abroad Participates in the 2nd International Patristic Conference
On December 11-12, 2014, Moscow’s National Nuclear Research University (MEPhI) hosted the 2nd International Patristic Conference on the topic “St Simeon the New Theologisan and His Spiritual Legacy.”
The forum was organized by the SS Kirill and Methodius All-Church Department and Post-Graduate Program together with the MEPhI.
The plenary meeting on December 12 was devoted to the theological teaching and personality of St Simeon of the New Theologian, his predecessors and contemporaries, and the subsequent Byzantine tradition. Among the speakers were His Grace Bishop Irinej (Serbian Orthodox Church); Professor Anna Hunt (Trinity University, Leeds, Great Britain); Schema-Archimandrite Gabriel (Bunge) of Switzerland; PB Mikhailov, Docent of St Tikhon Orthodox Humanitarian University; Archimandrite Irinei (Steenberg) of the St Cyril and Athanasius of Alexandria Orthodox Institute of the the Western American Diocese of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, and others.
After the meetings, the results of the discussions were summarized. A compendium of the forum’s work will be published next year.
That evening, the conferees visited Peter Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Moscow, which hosted the IV Moscow Nativity Festival of classical music. Musical compositions based on the hymn Stabat Mater by Vivaldi, Rossini and Metropolitan Ilarion (Alfeev) were performed.
The Russian Philharmonic, the State Choral Academy’s AA Yurlov Capella, soloists Lyubov Stuchevskaya (soprano), Ann Viktorova (mezzo-soprano), Marat Gali (tenor0, Maksim Kuzmin-Karavaev (bass) performed under the direction of Dmitry Yurovsky.
