St Tikhon of Zadonsk Monastery Hosts a Joint Service of Hierarchs of the Russian Church Abroad and the Orthodox Church in America
On Saturday, August 13, 2011, at St Tikhon’s Monastery of the Orthodox Church in America, His Grace Bishop Tikhon of Philadelphia and Eastern Pennsylvania welcomed His Grace Bishop George of Mayfield of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, along with a group of his clergy and lay people. In addition, the Monastery was blessed by the presence of the miracle working Kursk-Root Icon of the Mother of God. The two hierarchs jointly celebrated Divine Liturgy at the monastery church, along with the Abbot, Hegumen Sergius (Bauer), and clergymen of the OCA and ROCOR. At the end of services, the hierarchs exchanged greetings and expressed their joy at the joint celebration, which could be held thanks to the historic concelebration of the Primates of both churches held in New York in May.
The websites of the Eastern American Diocese and St Tikhon of Zadonsk Monastery both note that Bishop George's participation represents the first time a hierarch of the Russian Church Abroad has served a Liturgy in this holy monastery in almost 70 years.
