News of the Church Music Committee of the Synod of Bishops
At the last meeting of the Church Music Committee, His Eminence
Metropolitan Laurus announced that in light of his work load,
he must resign as chairman of the Committee. In response to
the appeal of the Committee, the Synod of Bishops decreed that
Vladyka Metropolitan shall remain President Emeritus. By ukase
of the Synod of Bishops, Priest Andrei Papkov, the director
of the Summer Church Music School was appointed Executive President.
Also, by ukase of the Synod, Deacon Sergei Arlievsky was appointed
to the Committee in light of his many years of participation.
Lectures were heard at the meeting on Church music activities
in North America, Europe and Australia. In the summer of 2002,
5 students completed the Church Music Course at Holy Trinity
Seminary in Jordanville. Over the last decade, some 40 individuals
completed this Course, almost all of them now directing their
parish choirs.
The Canadian Diocese established a Church Music Committee under
the presidency of George Skok. Work is continuing on establishing
a Church Music Fund, along with the collection of the names
of choir directors and singers in North America. The Committee
pleads with the Reverend Rectors to complete and return the
questionnaires sent by the Committee to all the parishes last
year. Completed questionnaires should be sent to:
Dr. N. Schidlovsky
1004 Lois Street
Princeton, NJ 08540-9564
These questionnaires are crucial for the work of the Committee.
If a parish rector did not, for some reason, receive a questionnaire,
please contact the Secretary, Vladimir Krassovsky, at (650)
359-0901 or by e-mail at: vova@aol.com
The next annual Church Music Conference in North America is
scheduled for 8-12 October 2003 in Montreal, Canada, at St.
Nicholas Cathedral, and in 2004 in the church of SS. Peter and
Paul in Santa Rosa, California. Details on forthcoming Conferences
will be posted on the website of the Synod of Bishops of the
Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia, www.russianorthodoxchurch.ws,
and in the Church's publications.
