SAN FRANCISCO: The 41st Issue of Russkiy Pastyr is Out—24 February 2003

The 41st Issue of Russkiy Pastyr is Out

The 41st Issue of the Orthodox pastoral journal of the alumni of Holy Trinity Seminary, Russkiy Pastyr, has been published.
The Letter from the Editor is devoted to the Orthodox family. The “Sermon” section includes a series of short homilies of Protopriest Seraphim Slobodskoy, the author of the renowned book “Law of God.”

The section “Towards a History of the Russian Church in the 20th Century” is an article by the St. Petersburg historian V. Antonov: “Kronstadt Reprisal,” while “Pastoral Theology” continues the series of articles of Protopriest Eugene Popov (from his “Letters on Orthodox Pastoral Theology” of 1877): “The Obervance of Liturgical Days.” Of special interest is a conversation with the rector of the Church of the Resurrection of Christ in Medon (France), Protopriest Michael Artzimovich. Fr. Michael remembers the past and is not afraid to speak on the vital topics of church life.

An article by Archbishop Seraphim (Dulgov), who is retired and living at Lesna Convent in France, treats the question of the translation of liturgical texts. Vladyka Seraphim proposes a “third option,” preserving Church Slavonic while updating certain outdated terms.
The section on “Divine Services” contains two items: one, by Protopriest Paul Kalinovich, deals with the meaning and genesis of the prayer of release, and the second covers the European decrees of St. John of Shanghai and San Francisco the Miracle-worker.
Church choir directors and singers will find especially valuable the publication of four conversations on church singing by the director of the Cathedral of SS Peter and Paul in Mink, Irina Denisova.

The “Orthodox World-view” section has the lecture of Protopriest Peter Perekrestov given at the 10th All-diaspora Conference of Russian Orthodox Youth in Australia: “’Where Two or Three are Gathered in My Name’ and Our Future.”

A new section is introduced in Russkiy Pastyr No. 41, titled “Kladez,” or The Well. This section will offer the reader excerpts from archived letters and books, articles and memoirs; anything that might be of interest and which forms a living tradition of sorts. Issue No. 41 includes the following materials:

A letter by Protopresbyter Michael Pomazansky on the theology of Metropolitan Anthony, a letter by Metropolitan Seraphim on serving Russia and four published items by Bishop Mitrofan (Znosko-Borovsky): “Sermon on the Honoring of Protopresbyter Michael Pomazansky,” “Greeting to Metropolitan Philaret,” “Essence of Metropolitan Evlogii’s book ‘Path of My Life,’” and Bishop Mitrofan’s memoirs on the meeting of Metropolitans Anthony and Evlogii in Belgrade in 1934.

As always, the journal concludes with letters to the editor.

The price of the latest issue, including postage, is US $10.00 (1-year subscription, two issues: $20.00). Russkiy Pastyr may be ordered from:
