The
Russian Orthodox Youth Committee Turns 35.
Many members of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside of Russia,
even those in Russia, have likely heard of the Russian Orthodox
Youth Committee. The ROYC was established with the blessing
of the First Hierarch of the Russian Orthodox Church Outside
of Russia, His Eminence Metropolitan Philaret of blessed memory
in 1968. The main goal of the ROYC was to help the young generation,
and all Russian Orthodox people abroad in general, learn the
history of Russia, its culture, and also to gain a deeper
understanding of their Orthodox faith, which colored the world-view
of the Russian people.
The ROYC is a benevolent organization by nature. The Committee
has managed to help:
- Some
young people are aided in making pilgrimages to the Holy
Land.
- Material
aid is provided for erecting churches throughout the Russian
diaspora.
- In
extreme instances, material aid is provided to monasteries
and clergymen.
What is the source of funding for the ROYC? At the present
time, there are two: from the sale of literature, and voluntary
donations from Russian people. By the mercy of God, these
are continuing.
The members of ROYC give their time without compensation with
great dedication for this God-pleasing work.
Over these 35 years, the ROYC has published 53 books and 34
full-color wall calendars. Thousands of books have been sent
to Russia to distribute among the faithful--books are needed
more in the Homeland than abroad. Among the books published
by ROYC are:
- The
Holy Land- Jerusalem, the Holy Mountain of Athos
- Monasteries
and Churches of Holy Russia
- E.A.
Slobodskoy's "Azbuka"
- "Discussions
on Holy Scripture, Faith and the Church," by Archbishop
Nathaniel, in five volumes
- "Lives
of Saints," by Protopriest Victor Ilienko
- "Sermons
of Metropolitan Philaret (Voznesensky)" in two volumes
- "Miracle-working
Icons of the Mother of God in Russian History," by
Protopriest Alexander Kiselev
The Committee's
main offering is a 16-page color bilingual calendar on Orthdox
historical themes.
The so-called
"Martianoff" tear-off calendars have enjoyed great
popularity.
At the present time, the ROYC is headed by His Eminence Archbishop
Hilarion of Sydney and the Australian-New Zealand Diocese;
the Vice President is Nadezhda Mokhoff, and the Secretary
is Matushka Irina Dutikow.
The ROYC's activities are very important for the Russian people,
both in the Homeland and abroad. The management of ROYC gives
heartfelt thanks to all Russian people who give moral and
material support, and asks everyone for their prayers.
The ROYC would like to do a great deal more, remembering that
"the harvest truly is great, and the laborers are few."
