The feast of Holy Pentecost at the Cathedral of Our Lady “of the Sign” in Manhattan

On the eve of the feast of the Holy Trinity, Pentecostal Soul Saturday, June 6, 2020, His Grace Bishop Nicholas of Manhattan celebrated Divine Liturgy for the Departed in St Sergius Chapel at the Synodal headquarters in New York City.

That evening and on Sunday morning, June 7, the great feast of Holy Pentecost (Holy Trinity Sunday), His Eminence Metropolitan Hilarion of Eastern America and New York led the all-night vigil and celebrated Divine Liturgy in the Synodal Cathedral “of the Sign.” Concelebrating with the First Hierarch of the Russian Church Abroad were Bishop Nicholas and cathedral clerics: Cathedral Dean Archpriest Andrei Sommer, Archpriest Edward Chervinsky, Protodeacon Nicolas Mokhoff, and Hierodeacon Panteleimon (Jigalin). Praying at the divine services, which were held under the aegis of the wonderworking Kursk Root Icon of the Mother of God “of the Sign” was His Eminence Archbishop Gabriel of Montreal and Canada.

In accordance with tradition, the church was adorned with greenery. All of the festal divine services were broadcast via live-stream for parishioners who were forced to pray at home by quarantine measures and local safety requirements.

Upon completion of Liturgy, Metropolitan Hilarion greeted the clergy and all those praying at home with the great feast, which marks the "birthday" of Christ’s Church. In his sermon, His Eminence spoke about the history of the feast and noted that the descent of the Holy Spirit on the Apostles allowed for the dissemination of the Christian Faith throughout the whole world. Metropolitan Hilarion called on the faithful to call down the grace of the Holy Spirit in their own prayers, that it might purify and strengthen us, bringing us closer to God on our path toward the Heavenly Kingdom. He also wished that parishioners might soon be able to return to the churches and pray together at the services.

Bishop Nicholas then led Vespers with the Kneeling Prayers traditionally read on this day.
